HM Series Low-EMI Oscillators

LOW-EMI OSCILLATORS

Mercury’s HM series of spread-spectrum clock oscillators can reduce system EMI by as much as 12dB. HM oscillators are direct replacements for standard 7 x 5mm, 5 x 3.2mm and 3.2 x 2.5mm oscillators, avoiding the need to modify PCBs and include extra components to solve system EMI problems.

Unlike a conventional clock oscillator, the mode energy of a spread spectrum clock is spread over a wider bandwidth, resulting due to the frequency modulation technique. The modulation centre frequency is in the kHz range, making the modulation process transparent to the oscillator frequency. The controlled modulation process can be all on one side of the nominal frequency (Down Spread) or 50% around the nominal frequency (Centre Spread). Down spread is preferred if over-clocking causes problems to the system.
